Oncology screening

  • According to statistics a third of the population in the Czech Republic is diagnosed with tumor disease.
  • In 1990 a patient with cancer had 20% chances of recovery, now the chances increased to 50 %.
  • In spite of that, out of 60,000 people who are every year diagnosed with tumor diseases 29,000 do not survive.
  • If we compare the statistics of CR for oncologic diseases with advanced countries, Czech Republic is among the worst-performing countries.
  • About 60 % of tumor diseases are caused by obesity, lack of movement and smoking. Motivation for change of bad lifestyle is very often a disease.
  • The worst survival rates in cancer patients are for rectal cancer and colorectal cancer, whose occurrence in the Czech Republic is the highest in the world.
  • Patients usually seek medical help in very advanced stages of disease, when chances of survival are small and treatment is very difficult.

The basic rule of treatment of oncologic diseases is that the sooner a health problem is detected the higher are the chances of successful treatment. For this reason we offer preventive oncologic examination followed by a program of systematic recommendations for healthy lifestyle.

Why is it good to invest in oncologic examination?

* This series of special examinations estimates for each client the individual degree of potential risk based on genetic predispositions, lifestyle and current health condition.

* Basic preventive examination is designed to exclude tumor diseases, such as colorectal cancer, lung cancer, bladder cancer, skin cancer, liver cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

* The program focuses mainly on the prevention of malignant tumors in people, who have no symptoms, but because of their family medical history and other individual parameters, consider knowledge of their current health condition to be important and are interested in detecting possible oncologic disease in time.

After complex evaluation of all tests the patient receives detailed medical report. Based on this report he receives concrete recommendations; what to avoid and how to change current habits to reduce the risk of oncologic problems.

In case of partial positive results of screening, when non-tumor disease is diagnosed, we immediately provide recommendation for further diagnostic and therapeutic procedures by competent professional. In case a malignant tumor is detected we offer you immediately the best possible medical care.

How often should the examination be repeated?

The examination captures your current health conditions. But nobody can give you 100% certainty for your health. Oncologic examination cannot cover the full scale of malignant tumor diseases; it is focused on the most common types of cancer. After preventive examination it is therefore necessary to pay attention to any changes in your organism and in case of any health problems visit a doctor. In rare cases it may happen that tumor disease is still below detection threshold during the examination. It is so subtle that it is not detected during visualization examinations or in blood sample. Or it breaks open shortly after the examination. In case of a quickly growing tumor, whose cells are dividing rapidly (e.g. leukemia and lymphomas), the disease can manifest itself in one month. Fortunately these types of tumor diseases, affecting blood and lymphatic tissues, are very sensitive to treatment.

It is our wish to provide to our patients only the best preventive care and send out from Canadian Medical Care as few negative results of examination as possible. We recommend repeating the examination once per year, because currently negative result can change in twelve months. And it is good to find out in time. In advanced countries people have already realized that prevention pays off.

What does examination in Canadian Medical Care look like?

Doctor records your medical history – asks specific questions regarding diseases in your family, your diseases in the past, workload and lifestyle, which could lead to increased risk of tumor disease.

Then doctor carries out thorough physical examination – looks at the tongue, throat, palpates thyroid gland and the main groups of nodules. By tapping and listening he examines the heart and lungs, palpates abdomen, investigates sensitivity in the area of reins, condition of veins and arteries in legs. Examines your hearing and sight. This examination also includes skin examination and “per-rectum” examination – a method which reveals as much as 20 % of rectal tumors. In men it can detect enlarged prostate and in women ovarian cysts, benign uterus tumors (myomas, fibroids), sometimes also malignant tumors.

The examination also includes ECG (electrocardiogram) record, measurement of blood pressure, weight and height.

You will give blood and urine samples for laboratory examination (blood count, minerals in blood: sodium, potassium, chlorides and proteins, liver tests, blood sugar, spectrum of fats with emphasis on the levels and types of cholesterol and tumor markers) according to doctor’s indication.

You will receive testing set for occult (hidden) bleeding from alimentary tract, including instructions.

Ultra-sound examination of abdomen, focusing on liver, gallbladder and biliary tract, pancreas, spleen and reins, and more according to doctor’s indication.

X-rays for lungs (according to doctor’s examination)

For women up to 45 years of age we carry out ultra-sound breast examination and for women above 45 years of age mammography examination in specialized diagnostic center at UPMD.

The above examinations can be individually extended by the doctor. If you are interested in additional examinations you first need to consult the doctor to determine whether such examinations are justified.

After about one week you will come for a brief visit, during which the doctor will discuss in detail the results of your examination and hand over to you your medical report and, when necessary, recommend a treatment.
